Terms Often Heard in EO World

Check back to this list from time to time as we'll be adding terms along the way . . .

Whether you are new to Essential Oils or a seasoned user, we are constantly finding new terms that are being associated with them.  We would like to help make their definitions more user friendly.  Please leave us comments and help contribute to this list with either new terms or those that you have questions about:

EO(s) ~ Essential Oils
Volatile liquids distilled from plants using leaves, stems, bark, seeds and other parts for their chemical properties.  Used for healthcare purposes, the consumer should seek the highest quality pure oils that they can find.  Not all essential oils are created equal.  Often times companies dilute the pure oils with additives.  We recommend that you take an active roll in researching the oils that you use so that you can make the best possible choice for you and your family.

CARRIER OIL ~ Used in the EO world to help dilute and "carry" them to the skin.  Most commonly used is Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO) which has been spun to eliminate the fats and "meat" of the fruit.  Other recommended carrier oils include:
Grapeseed Oil (thinner)
Almond Oil
espa blankSunflower Oil
Emu Oil
Olive Oil (Thicker)
Naked Salve (Thicker)

To apply an EO diluted (recommended for "hot" oils and for all oil use on children) ~ apply a small amount of carrier oil in your palm and then add a couple of drops of your selected EO.  Blend together with your hands before applying to desired area.

NEAT ~  Applying EOs directly to the skin without the use of Carrier Oil
(Not recommended with "hot" Oils or for used on Children)

cinnamonHOT OILS ~ these are oils that have a high potency and can cause a burning sensation to your skin.  These oils should be blended with Naked Salve or a Carrier Oil.  When using Hot oils be sure to always use a small test area to check for allergic or adverse reaction to sensitive skin.
Examples included but not limited to this list are:
Cinnamon
Cassia
Oregano
Melaleuca

NAKED SALVE:  A blended combination of Beeswax, Coconut Oil and Olive Oil (does not have any EOs directly added to the batch).  Often used in a heavier application of EOs on bottom of feet and hands.  Add different EOs for different ailments.

DRIP vs DROP:  A drip of EO from their original bottle (with an orifice) is usually a little larger than a drop from an eye glass dropper.

DIFFUSING: There are several ways to apply this aromatherapy technique but in the EO world an electric DIFFUSER is application most talked about.  An electric diffuser breaks up the blending of essential (or fragrant) oil and water into mist of micro-particles and disperses them into the air. There are many benefits from the aromatherapy of the oils, and the ionizing and humidifying effect of the water vapor.
